Images and the Poetic Monologue: A Workshop with Howard Craft

This workshop is for youth in the 6th-8th grade age range.

In this workshop, students focus on creating vivid and powerful images through writing basedon using the five senses. Students will create free verse poems and gain an understanding ofhow poets move from abstract idea to concrete image. Students also learn how to incorporate the use of imagery in the writing of poetic monologues and learn the basics of creating character-driven persona poems.

Howard L. Craft is an award-winning playwright, poet, essayist, screenwriter and arts educator. He is the author of two books of poetry: Across the Blue Chasm and Raising Sky. His essays have appeared in The Paris Review and have been included in The Routledge Companion to African American Theatre. He is the author of several plays and the creator of the first African-American superhero radio serial, The Jade City Pharaoh. He currently teaches as the Piller Professor of the Practice in the Writing for Screen and Stage program, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Shannon C. Ward

Raised in a renovated slaughterhouse on the outskirts of Wilmington, Ohio, Shannon Ward is author of the poetry collection Blood Creek (Longleaf Press, 2013). She received an MFA in Poetry from North Carolina State University in 2009, and she is the recipient of the 2016 Foley Poetry Prize, the 2016 White Oak Kitchen Prize in Southern Poetry, and a 2013 Nazim Hikmet Poetry Prize. Her work has received generous support from Yaddo, Willapa Bay AIR, the Eastern Frontier Educational Foundation, the Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, Hypatia in the Woods, and Vermont Studio Center, and her poems have appeared in New Ohio Review, Great River Review, Tar River Poetry, and others.
